Memorial Service Set In LexingtonFor Kentucky Native And Bruce Lee's "Enter The Dragon" Star, Jim Kelly. R.I.P. , Jim.

Memorial to be held for Paris native and actor Jim Kelly

A memorial will be held in Lexington Saturday for Millersburg native Jim Kelly, a 1970s black action hero who starred in several movies including Melinda, Three the Hard Way and Enter the Dragon with Bruce Lee.

Kelly was also a part of the movie Undercover Brother and was a guest at comic book conventions throughout the country.

The public memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Historic Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church, 540 West Maxwell Street. Kelly's daughter, Sabrena Kelly-Lewis, and the church will host the memorial service.
"This memorial will be a celebration of his life and will pay tribute to him. This service will also pay tribute to his mother, Arnita Taylor, who died two years ago," said Kelly-Lewis.
Kelly, 67, died of cancer at his San Diego home. Kelly's death came as a surprise because he kept his illness from his family. Kelly thought he could overcome cancer.
"He was a very private person. He was very self-conscious when it came to his body. He treated his body like a temple and didn't drink, smoke, or do drugs," Kelly-Lewis said.

Family in Kentucky and surrounding states are expected to be at the memorial service.
Kelly's remains were cremated, so this memorial service will take the place of the funeral.
There will not be a service in San Diego; however, Kelly's ashes will remain with his wife, Marcia Kelly, who lived with Kelly in San Diego.

Former TV Cop, Michael Glaser, David Starsky Of “Starsky & Hutch”Fame Is Chrged With Drug Possession In Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Former TV cop hit with drug charge in BG
Glaser slated to appear May 31 in Warren court

Glaser charged with charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia
Glaser charged with charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia
By DEBORAH HIGHLAND

Just hours after Paul Michael Glaser – an author and actor best known for his portrayal of 1970s television cop David Starsky in the show “Starsky & Hutch” – read excerpts from his book to schoolchildren here last week, Bowling Green police Officer Michael Rexroat busted him on a drug charge.

Glaser, 69, of Venice, Calif., is charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia-buy/possess, according to Warren Circuit Court records. He was cited to appear in Warren District Court in front of Judge John Brown at 1:30 p.m. May 31. City police spokesman Officer Ronnie Ward confirmed that the man cited here is the same man who portrayed the TV police officer.

Glaser was in Bowling Green on May 10 promoting his young adult fantasy novel, “Chrystallia and the Source of Light,” which was released last fall. He read to children at Moss Middle School and Bowling Green Junior High School. He also spoke at the Warren County Public Library.

The book is about a girl and her brother who are about to lose their mother and their house. It’s their last Christmas together, and the children discover an underground world of crystals and minerals. Glaser told students at both schools that he based the story on his own life experiences and interests. He lost his first wife and a daughter to AIDS.

City police were called to Glaser’s hotel, the Hilton Garden Inn, 1020 Wilkinson Trace, on the afternoon of May 10 after an anonymous complaint “of a person named ‘Paul Glaser’ smoking marijuana near the elevators,” Rexroat wrote in the citation.

Rexroat knocked on Glaser’s hotel room door, Room 444. Glaser opened the door, allowed Rexroat to enter the room and consented to a room search, according to the citation.

Rexroat found an object that appeared to be a box in the front pocket of a pair of blue jeans. The “box turned out to be a pipe” and Rexroat alleges that “the box” contained burnt marijuana residue, according to the citation.

Glaser acknowledged that the substance was medical marijuana prescribed to him in California, according to the citation.

Kentucky does not recognize medical marijuana licenses from other states and does not issue any, Bowling Green-Warren County Drug Task Force Director Tommy Loving said. No amount of marijuana is legal for possession in Kentucky.

If convicted as charged, Glaser could receive a 45-day sentence for the marijuana possession charge, a class B misdemeanor, and up to 12 months on the paraphernalia charge, a class A misdemeanor, Assistant County Attorney Jill Justice said.

Whitney Houston Begins Drug Rehab. Who'd Have Thunk That!?!

Whitney Houston begins drug rehab
By Alan Duke

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Whitney Houston is getting new help for her much-publicized struggle with drugs and alcohol, her representative told CNN Monday.

"I can confirm that Whitney Houston is currently in an out-patient rehab program for drug and alcohol treatment," Kristen Foster said. "Whitney voluntarily entered the program to support her long-standing recovery process."

No details about the treatment, or what led to the singer's decision to start it, were released.

Illness forced Houston to postpone several shows on the European leg of her "Nothing But Love" comeback tour a year ago.

Time To Tune Out Charlie Sheen. I AGREE.

Time to tune out Charlie Sheen.

Game-changing revolution in the Middle East, most lately in Libya?

The most comprehensive report on American women since the early 1960s?

Eh, they can wait.

Apparently the spiraling mental state of sitcom star Charlie Sheen cannot.

He's here, he's there, he's everywhere, morning, noon and night. Even if you try to miss him — live or Memorex — you can't: “Today.” “Good Morning, America.” “20/20.” “Piers Morgan.” Etc.

Why the media (news and entertainment media, if there is indeed any difference anymore) absorption in the unraveling, and willingly ubiquitous, Mr. Sheen?

Because he's on television, dummy. (Which demonstrates again how prophetic Paddy Chayefsky's 1976 film, “Network,” from which that line came, is still proving to be.)

Would any news or entertainment outlet devote an hour or a section to Joe Schmo's deconstruction on the work, home and mind fronts? As important a question: Would anyone watch or read it? But a $1.8 million-per-episode television guy? Big business. Ratings have plumped up as Mr. Sheen has melted down.

If the suits are pleased, not everyone else is, and some media observers are saying the Sheen play has far exceeded its legitimate aspects as a news story and is reaching dangerous and irresponsible territory. A piece by Julie Moos on poynter.org, a journalism website, provides a roundup of tsk-tsks about interviewers as enablers to a sad and possibly sick man, rather than trainers of spotlights on issues such as substance abuse and domestic violence.

But that's only part of the equation. The American news consumer is the other.

You don't watch this, they don't do this.

Why are you watching?

Kardashians Prove The World Is Upside Down. YEP!

Kardashians prove the world is upside down
By MITCH ALBOM

In the New New Economy, you don’t have to do anything, make anything or have any talent. Just ask Kim Kardashian.

A recent story in the Hollywood Reporter revealed Kim and her ubiquitous family pulled in $65 million last year. Sixty-five million! That’s a whole lot of something for a whole lot of nothing.

But in the New New Economy, the only thing that matters is audience. If you’ve got followers, you’ll have customers. Think of those Verizon commercials where a mob of people follow behind the guy in glasses. That guy, in the New New Economy, would be General Motors.

Here’s how it works. In the old days, you made something. A saddle. A table. A car. Then you sold that something to people. If they liked your product, they bought more, you made more, they bought more, etc.

The world has flipped. Product - something tangible - is being made in Third World nations. Audience is what Americans are specializing in.

Start with Kardashian. She makes nothing. She has no particular skill. Her initial claim to fame was having a self-made sex video that went wild across the Internet.

The sole fascination with her seems to be - and I don’t mean to be crude here, but correct me if I’m wrong - Who’s she having sex with now? What would it be like to have sex with her? How is she always at a party? and Her butt.

These curiosities have spawned an audience of over 6 million Twitter fans, and a blog that she claims has more than 40 million hits a month.

In the New New Economy, that’s all you need.

The (expensive) life of the party

What Kardashian does, very cleverly, is sell her ravenous audience to the highest bidder. She charges up to six figures to attend a party, and reportedly can get a million for a party overseas (hey, all that travel!).

How can someone charge for going to a party? Because, like that guy in the Verizon commercial, she brings all those curious people with her, in real and virtual life. Photographers, reporters, blog followers. The party gets publicized because she is attending, which is why the party pays for her to show.

Same goes for Twitter. Kardashian reportedly charges $25,000 to endorse a product with a tweet. Simply by typing “I just used ———— hairspray!” her words go to 6.5 million people, presumably many who have so little imagination about their own lives, they just want to emulate hers. For the hairspray company, that means potential customers.

This, by the way, is no different than some of the biggest companies in the New New Economy. Look at Google. Look at Facebook. They don’t actually make anything. You can’t physically touch their product — can’t drive it or hammer with it. But what they deliver is audience. Hundreds of millions of people gathered in one place. And they earn billions by selling that audience to advertisers.

What those entities, like the Kardashians, are really in the business of is - for want of a better word - attendance.

Who can scream the loudest?

And this is the wave of the future. (Some would say the wave of the present.) America’s best industrialists once specialized in inventing, crafting and mass-producing the best products in the world.

Now “getting noticed” is an actual job description. It sure fits the Kardashians. They reportedly even get paid to appear on tabloid covers - once something people tried to avoid.

My worry is that instead of teaching our kids that skill, dedication and hard work are the path to success, we are teaching them that he-who-makes-the-biggest-jackass-video and she-who-pulls-her-skirt-up-highest can earn the most money.

Remember a few years back, when studies began to show that what kids wanted most in life was to be famous? It’s an actual profession now. Lindsay Lohan (who has ceased to be an actress and become a sideshow), Paris Hilton, Perez Hilton - they are all proof of it.

The problem is, there are still only 24 hours in the day, and people can only be titillated for so long before they lose interest. Fame in and of itself cannot sustain as a profession. And if we stop making things the world needs, the only way to keep on top is to scream louder and be more audacious than the next person trying to draw the world’s attention.

What kind of economy is that? The New New one. We used to make and sell the tent. Now we just try to fill it.
