They were more honest about it in the days of the Old West. Wanted posters were hung in public. Bounty hunters went after their human quarry, knowing the reward attached. The human quarry knew, too.

The modern-day New Orleans Saints had a behind-the-scenes bounty program. They didn’t advertise it. Their quarry — opposing quarterbacks like Aaron Rogers, Cam Newton, Brett Favre and Kurt Warner — didn’t have the fair warning of public posters, but the bounty hunters who suited up in team uniforms knew who they were to intentionally maim or knock silly and they knew how much they would be paid for it: $1,500 for knockouts, $1,000 for cart-offs, and the reward was double or triple for playoff games.

If this doesn’t horrify fans who have at least read about the higher rates of concussions being reported in the NFL, then there’s something amiss with more than professional football.

But some fans don’t have a problem with this. They say it’s all part of the game — rough stuff for grownups, if you can’t take the hits, stay off the field, yadda-yadda-yadda. They need to ask themselves this: Would they want their kids playing a game this way, or to grow up to play a game that offers bounties?

The NFL has a problem with the Saints’ bounty program, very belatedly, some say — but organized football hit New Orleans hard last week for it: Head Coach Sean Payton, suspended without pay for the next season; former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, indefinitely banned; general manager Mickey Loomis banned for the first eight games next season, assistant coach Joe Vitt for the first six. Also the team lost two second-round draft picks and was fined $500,000.

Despite the unprecedented nature of some of the league punishments, all that sounded like pretty weak tea to Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., too. As chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, he plans to convene a hearing about bounties in pro sports (football and others) and to examine whether federal law should make such programs and acts a crime. “If this activity were taking place off of a sporting field, away from a court, nobody would have a second thought (about whether it’s wrong),” he told MSNBC.

Washington Post sports columnist Thomas Boswell looked beyond the immediate repercussions to the bigger questions about the bounties, the punishments and the sport at the center of it all. Saying pro football was at its crossroads, he wrote, “The NFL has to change. A lot. Can Lions, Bears, Jaguars and Bengals really change their claws, paws, jaws and stripes?”

Hamartia. The "tragic flaw" described by Aristotle: A leader cannot control his own inner shortcoming, which causes him to achieve the reverse of what he desired. In "Antigone," the king, Creon, tells himself he is acting in the interest of the city, when actually he is acting to glorify his own ego -- this hamartia destroys him. Brett Favre comes up a bit short of a character in ancient Thebes, but on Sunday he was brought low by hamartia all the same. It was not enough for Favre's team to reach the Super Bowl -- he had to get the credit. Game tied with 19 seconds remaining, Favre scrambled at about the New Orleans 40-yard line, with open field ahead of him. All he needed to do was run a few yards, hook-slide, call timeout, and the Vikings' strong-legged kicker, Ryan Longwell, had a solid chance to win the NFC championship. But the credit had to go to Favre; he had to throw a spectacular pass at the end, so television announcers would swoon. So he heave-hoed a dramatic across-the-field pass. It was intercepted, and the Saints won in overtime.

Perhaps you are thinking, "It was just a dumb mistake, and the whole thing happened in a couple of seconds." No. Two years of Favre's life built up to that moment. For two years, Favre has insisted that entire NFL franchises, the Jets and the Vikings, become thralls to his celebrity. He has used his stature to demand, demand, demand -- the crux of the demands are always attention and publicity for himself. Now he is brought low. In two of the past three seasons, Favre has lost in the NFC Championship Game. Each time, his team seemed poised to win at the end; each time, Favre's final play of the game was a disastrous interception. And each of those title losses was in overtime -- to punish Favre for his hamartia, twice the football gods allowed him to come so close, so close, then denied him. Favre has been brought so low, he is now being laughed at in Wisconsin, and he has only himself to blame. Aristotle would not be surprised by the ending of the Favre saga. If, of course, it was the ending.

Police: Jealous Kazemi shot Steve McNair while he slept

Police have determined that Sahel Kazemi murdered former Titans quarterback Steve McNair last weekend with four shots while he was asleep on the couch, then sat down next to him and shot herself in the temple.

Metro Police Chief Ronal Serpas said at a press conference this afternoon that their interviews with Kazemi's friends and coworkers showed that in the last five to seven days of her life, the 20-year-old felt her life was unraveling.

She had recently saw signs that McNair may be involved with another woman, and she might have been worried about making rent payments and payments on two cars, including a Cadillac Escalade registered in both her and McNair's name.

“We do believe there was evidence that she was spinning out of control,” Serpas said.

Serpas said Kazemi shot McNair in the right temple. That was followed quickly with two shots to the chest from about two to four feet away. Then she shot him in the left temple, which Serpas said was a "contact shot" within two inches from his head.

Then she sat next to him on the couch, Serpas said, in such a way that police believe she tried to stage her suicide to fall into his lap. She shot herself in the temple. Police think she fell into McNair's lap, then gravity pulled her to the floor.

According to preliminary results from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the 9-mm pistol found underneath Kazemi's body was the same that killed both of them. While blood contaminated the gunshot residue test, there was trace evidence of residue on her left hand.

Serpas said Kazemi had become very distraught, and on two occasions told friends and associates that her life was all messed up and she "was going to end it all." Several things were overwhelming her, including financial problems, Serpas said. Her roommate was moving out, meaning her rent payment was about to increase. She was also making payments on the Escalade she co-owned with McNair.

Serpas said Kazemi saw McNair with another woman days before the murder and attempted to follow the woman, whom police said they talked to but Serpas did not identify.

Police also believe Kazemi purchased the gun in the parking lot of Dave & Buster's, where she worked, in the middle of a shift.

Serpas said there was no evidence that anyone else was involved, or that the crime scene had been tampered with by the men who found their bodies and called police that morning.

Serpas said they did not exact time of the shooting, but believed it happened sometime after 1 a.m. or 1:45 a.m. The next-door neighbor was not home that night, and arrived home between 6 a.m. and 6:30 a.m., and heard nothing after that.

Serpas said there were no drugs found at the scene or drug paraphernalia, but were awaiting toxicology reports on the bodies.

A state medical examiner has said that preliminary testing from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation points to the likely conclusion of murder-suicide in the deaths of Steve McNair and Sahel Kazemi.

Feng Li, the assistant medical examiner who conducted the autopsies, said he will wait for the investigation to be closed before he completes Kazemi’s death certificate to reflect that she died of suicide.

“The results were very consistent in supporting our decision,” Li said.

Gunshot residue and ballistics testing are also consistent with a ruling of murder-suicide, Li said.

“With the lab tests to be obtained combined with the autopsy findings, we will put a final opinion on the death certificate,” Li said.

Is Spurned Love The REAL Reason Sahel Kazemi Killed Steve McNair And Herself? I Suspect So.

I believe either Steve McNair was going back to his wife, and therefore no divorce and no marriage in his and Sahel's future, or that Steve flirted with another woman at the club the night before the slayings, which provoked the outrage.

Like I said in an earlier: NOTHING worse than a woman scorned -- or as a reader corrected me -- especially one with a gun!

NASHVILLE — The gun recovered at the scene of the deaths of Steve McNair and Sahel Kazemi was purchased by Kazemi recently, Nashville police said.

Kazemi, 20, died Saturday of a single gunshot to the head alongside former Tennessee Titans quarterback McNair, who had two gunshots to the head and two to the chest. The gun was found under Kazemi's body.

"We believe the pistol recovered from the apartment was purchased by Kazemi," police spokesman Don Aaron said.

The Associated Press reported that Kazemi's nephew, Farzin Abdi, said that Nashville police told him they are almost certain that Kazemi was the shooter. Abdi maintainted she had no motive.

"There was no way she was depressed and wanting to do this," Abdi said. "She was so happy. ... She just had it made, you know, (with) this guy taking care of everything."

Police said the possibility of a murder-suicide is still on the table, but there are several other theories of the crime still possible.

Kazemi's ex-boyfriend, Keith Norfleet, was questioned for several hours by police yesterday. Aaron said he is not a suspect, and there are still no suspects being actively pursued.

"He was cooperative during questioning, then he went on his way," Aaron said.

Norfleet told the Tennessean on Saturday that he went to police headquarters on his own Saturday, looking for answers on whether the woman he broke up with five months prior was the one who died alongside McNair. He was not questioned that night, but asked to leave his contact information, Aaron said.

"We know Norfleet was a former boyfriend of Kazemi's, and he obviously had his opinion of the relationship between she and McNair," Aaron said. "He was a person who needed to be interviewed in detail."

Aaron said the testing to see if gunshot residue was present on Kazemi's hands has not yet been completed.

Federal law prohibits anyone under 21 from purchasing a handgun.

Tennessee requires a person to be 21 to have carry permit.

By all accounts it was a whirlwind romance.

It started about six months ago, when former Titans quarterback Steve McNair exchanged phone numbers with Sahel Kazemi, a then-19-year-old waitress working at Dave & Buster's restaurant at Opry Mills. Saturday, the relationship ended in tragedy, as the couple was found shot to death in a downtown condominium.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the events leading up to the deaths, but according to friends of Kazemi, she was smitten and so was McNair.

For her 20th birthday in late May, McNair got her a black Cadillac Escalade. Her family met him over sushi dinner that same weekend. Before that, Kazemi zipped around in his Bentley, telling family and friends about the generosity of her new beau — a former professional athlete.

"We met him because I don't watch football and didn't know who he was," said Farzin Abdi, Kazemi's nephew, who was in town from Jacksonville, Fla. to retrieve the body. "We went out to dinner and she was so happy and was having fun. Were we happy about the relationship? No."

Kazemi's family and friends pieced together a portrait of their relationship — one they were leery of because of her age — as police confirmed on Sunday that McNair was shot four times. Police have stopped just shy of calling it a murder-suicide at the Second Avenue condominium where both of them died.

"It's hard right now to imagine what people are saying," Abdi said. "I can't believe it because she was a sweet girl. This is hard on us."

Marriage anticIpated

There were trips, dinners, a promise of living together and ultimately marriage, according to Abdi, 27.

"I don't know if he had filed for divorce but I thought it wouldn't happen," Abdi said, adding that Kazemi was a child when adopted into the family after her mother died in Iran. Abdi's mother is Kazemi's sister.

McNair took Kazemi, known as Jenny to friends, on trips to Key West in Florida, Las Vegas, California, Hawaii and McNair's farm in Mississippi, with the couple seeing each other often, Abdi said. ...

Victim's sister: 'Third person involved' in Steve McNair's death

The sister of Sahel Kazemi, the 20-year-old women found shot dead with former NFL QB Steve McNair on Saturday, says she was a young woman who wanted to have fun and couldn't have hurt anyone — not herself, nor anyone else.

Kazemi was actually the aunt of Sepideh Salmani, but they were raised as sisters. Salmani's mother adopted her when she was 9, after Kazemi's mother was killed in their native Iran. Salmani talked to her sister every day, and said she was very happy in her relationship with Steve McNair.

She doesn't believe her sister killed McNair, or herself.

"She was one, young girl who had so many dreams that they never came true," Salmani said. "She would never kill anyone, ever. Or anything. Not even a little bug. I want people to know that."

Nashville police have ruled McNair's death a homicide, but have refused to classify Sahemi's death. McNair suffered four gunshot wounds on Saturday, while Sahemi received just one. The gun was discovered underneath her body.

McNair was found sitting on the sofa. Kazemi was lying on the floor.

Disbelief was also building near Kazemi's home, where police were interviewing neighbors Saturday.

Regan Howard said when Kazemi first became her neighbor, she didn't know if it was Kazemi or McNair who moved in since he was there so much.

"She was such a nice girl," Howard said. "I can't believe she would do that."

When McNair got her the Escalade, Howard said, she had to help her figure out how to use the remote starter.

Salmani said she talked to her sister nearly every day, and that she'd been hearing about McNair for several months, since he started coming to Dave & Busters and chatting her up.

"He started to talk to her a little," Salmani said. "They exchanged phone numbers, and started dating from there."

Kazemi told her sister that McNair was in the process of divorcing.

"That's why she was like, 'OK, now you're divorcing. We can date,'" Salmani said. "He told her, it was going to be finished, the whole divorce was going to be done, two weeks from yesterday."

Although a check of Davidson County's court records shows there is no divorce pending — at least in Nashville — McNair's house is for sale. His wife, Mechelle McNair, hasn't spoken to the media. Police said she is distraught over his death.

Salmani said her sister believed that she and McNair would move in together once the divorce was final, and eventually marry.

"All she was trying to do was have fun," Salmani said. "Nothing else. I believe there is a third person involved."

Kazemi first came to Nashville nearly four years ago with her then-boyfriend, Keith Norfleet. They broke up about five months ago, and she started seeing McNair soon after.

More Update On Steve McNair's Murder And His Girlfriend Sahel Kazemi's Suicide.

"Steve McNair was married and had been for some years, to Mechelle McNair (not Michelle, as sometimes reported). However, sources say that McNair had met Sahel Kazemi while she was working as a waitress at Dave & Busters and that they had been dating for four months.

There was one incident a couple of days ago when a black Cadillac Escalade which was registered in the names of both McNair and Kazemi was stopped by police. Sahel Kazemi was charged with DUI, although she reportedly claimed to be "high" rather than drunk. McNair had been with her in the car when it was stopped but as he had committed no offence was allowed to proceed.

In the actual shooting Steve McNair suffered a number of gunshot wounds while Kazemi herself had only one to the head. The gun used in the shootings was reportedly found close to her body."

For those of you wondering what her nationality is, I think she is Iranian.
