OK, that didn't happen. The Celtics actually selected Antoine Walker from the University of Kentucky. That didn't upset me. I was always a Magic guy, not a Bird guy.

Sadly, here is another thing that has not occurred: I have fallen slightly short of earning $108 million either writing about or playing basketball, although I did receive several participation awards at the StreetBall Showdown.

According to multiple reports, Walker earned at least $108 million in NBA salaries from 1996 through 2009. He now lists $4.3 million in assets and $12.7 million in liabilities. That might explain why he played 43 games last season for the Idaho Stampede in the NBA Developmental League, which caps annual player salaries at $25,500.

Walker, who played two seasons for Rick Pitino at UK, returned to the headlines Tuesday after his attorneys entered a guilty plea on his behalf to one felony count of passing bad checks in Las Vegas

Walker, 34, is expected to draw only probation as long as he continues to work on repaying $750,000 in debts to three Las Vegas casinos. His official sentencing has been set for Nov.1.

At $25,500 per season, Walker would have to play 29.4 more Developmental League seasons to pay off his debts — as long as he didn't need to pay taxes or have any living expenses.

I know what you're thinking: Is inching into the dreaded nine-figure career salary territory the surest path to financial ruin? Should you be afraid to ring up $108 million in salary? Aren't you better off clipping coupons and searching for early-bird specials than shopping at Prada and dating Evelyn Lozada?

“I think you might be able to tough it out on $108 million,” said Carl Heick, a private wealth advisor with Heick, Hester, Smith and Associates in Louisville.

“You'd probably be able to buy a nice watch and lease a nice car, if you wanted to drive a new one every year. But I would recommend no entourage. And don't play blackjack at $25,000 a hand. If you go to Las Vegas, stick with the $5 tables. Once you're down $1,000, walk away. The last time I was there, I walked away when I got up $100.”

Feel better? Me, too.

I shared some of Walker's numbers with Heick. According to basketball-reference.com, Walker started his pro career making about $1.6 million with the Celtics in the 1996-97 season, a year after he played for UK's 1996 NCAA championship team. By 2004-05 he had moved to the Atlanta Hawks and bumped his salary to $14.6 million, a career high.

When his career finally ended with the Memphis Grizzlies two years ago, his total earnings had moved to $108,142,015 — not counting per diem, endorsements or playoff earnings. The media isn't chasing him. Creditors are.

Heick went to his calculator. To simplify the exercise, he averaged Walker's earnings over 13 years, then figured in the necessary taxes. Walker might not shimmy to the plan Heick created, but you can pull that blanket off your head.

Heick said that if you had Walker's career earnings he would put you on an annual net allowance of about $1.57million. He'd also make you save $3 million per year and, just to be safe, invest it in a “brutally conservative” portfolio of bonds. When your days of being a high-flying earner were over, you'd have to get by on about $1.75 million pre-tax annually for the rest of your life.

“Think you could do it?” Heick asked.

I guess. But only if you insist.

Here We Go Again: According To TMZ, "NCAA Is Taking An Aggressive Look At University Of Kentucky Basketball Players".

Kentucky Basketball Players Subject of NCAA Probe

TMZ has learned the NCAA is taking an aggressive look at University of Kentucky basketball players -- past and current -- and their possible involvement with professional agents.

According to a source who was interviewed by an NCAA investigator, the agency is interested in at least four players -- two current and two who were just drafted by NBA teams.

In the case of one former Wildcat, we're told the NCAA wants to know about his relationship with his current agent. We're told the investigator asked about multiple meetings the agent allegedly had with the player ... dating back to the player's senior year in high school.

The insinuation is the agent had an arrangement with the player before he went to Kentucky.

It is a violation of NCAA rules for a student athlete to receive anything of value from an agent -- or to have any agreements, verbally or in writing, with an agent. Just ask USC, Reggie Bush or OJ Mayo.

Kentucky "declined comment" -- and a rep for the NCAA tells us, "The NCAA does not comment on current, pending or potential investigations.

According to the NBA rookie salary scale, here’s what the five Kentucky players drafted in the first round Thursday night can expect in guaranteed salary their first two seasons:

John Wall, the first pick: $4,286,900 his first season and $4,608,400 the second second.

DeMarcus Cousins, the fifth pick: $2,812,200 his first season and $3,023,100 the second season.

"The district attorney’s office [in Las Vegas] has filed a criminal complaint against former NBA all-star Antoine Walker alleging he failed to pay back $822,500 in gambling debts at three Las Vegas casinos.

Walker, who last played in the NBA for the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2008, made the all-star team three times as a member of the Boston Celtics. He also was on the Miami Heat team that won the championship in 2006. Walker was on a national championship team while in college too, as a starting forward for the University of Kentucky in 1996.

The complaint charges Walker, 32, who wants to return to the NBA, with three felony counts in passing $1 million in bad checks while taking out the markers at Caesars Palace, Planet Hollywood and Red Rock Resort. By law, gambling debts in Nevada are handled as bad check cases.

According to a copy of the complaint obtained by the Sun, Walker obtained gambling markers by writing 10 separate $100,000 checks with insufficient funds at the casinos from July 27 to Jan. 19.

Six of the checks were made out to Caesars Palace and two each to Planet Hollywood and Red Rock Resort, the complaint says.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Bernie Zadrowski, who runs the bad check unit, is asking a Las Vegas justice of the peace for a warrant to arrest Walker.

Zadrowski says Walker has paid back some of the $1 million in markers, but in addition to the $822,500 still owed to the casinos, Walker now owes the district attorney’s office $82,550 in fees for taking on the criminal prosecution, which the three casinos requested.

One of Walker’s Las Vegas attorneys, Jonathan Powell, declined to comment.

This is the second brush with the law for Walker this year. He was charged with suspected drunken driving in Miami Beach in January."

NBA Ref. plays ball and pleads guilty, will Michael Vick follow?

Former National Basketball Association referee, Tim "whistle for sale" Donaghy, implicated last month in an FBI investigation into illegal betting on games, pleaded guilty to fraud and conspiracy (with the MAFIA) in a federal court, admitting during a plea hearing that "I received cash payments for successful bets, "by having nonpublic information, I was in a unique position."

Meanwhile, we learn that Michael "the dogs of war" Vick has been offered a plea deal and he has until Friday to accept or reject it. This plea deal comes on the heels of news that Vick's other (one has already pleaded guilty and will testify against him) co-defendants are planning to accept pleas on Friday and will testify against him, too.

We will learn more about Vick on Friday.

My suggestion for punishment? In addition to any other punishment, Donaghy needs to first refund the ill-gotten gains and then be further sentenced to volunteer to referee little league games for 5 years or so.

As for Michael Vick, he needs to be made to volunteer at a Humane Society, attending to dogs, WITHOUT access to electricity or anything that can be used to kill the dogs by hanging or otherwise.

FBI calls offensive foul, will investigate NBA referee for "selling the whistle".

As an avid fan of the old Magic Johnson/Larry Bird/Isiah Thomas/Michael Jordan, etc., rivalry, and one who is trying very hard to be interested in the "new" NBA of spoiled rich kids and a "me, me, me" culture, including some bad refereeing, it comes as a "downer" to read and hear that the FBI is investigating a seasoned NBA Referee, Tim Donaghy, for "selling the whistle" in order to "point shave", so that he can pay gambling debts to organized crime.

In an update, the ref. has promised to name names and cooperate with the investigation.

So next time you hear the ref.'s whistle and watch the player or coach have a fit, there may be a valid reason why they protest.
